YMCA Camp Chingachgook Facilities
Cabins
With both single and bunk beds in a large, open room, and one or two beds in a smaller, private room, each cabin accommodates 12. Cabins are arranged in four separate villages: on the mountainside, by the lake, and two along the brook. Each village features a centrally located bathhouse. Eight of Chingachgook’s
23 cabins are winterized, as is the corresponding bathhouse with hot-water
showers available on the coldest winter days.
Slingerland Pavilion
Enjoy lakeside barbecues no matter what the weather. The roof shelters seating for 200 people and a wing for grilling. The open sides allow unimpeded views of the lake, mountains, and volleyball and basketball courts.
Dining Hall
Enjoy views of Buck and Pilot Knob Mountains while dining in the
bright, spacious dining hall. Chingachgook’s executive chef
enjoys preparing nutritious and delicious meals for small and large
groups (up to 350 people) all year-round.
Program Lodge
Rotary Lodge is the indoor program space for everything from wild and crazy dances to lectures and workshops. The Adirondack-style great hall is spacious and open yet maintains a feeling of coziness because the walls and ceiling are finished in natural pine and the room focuses on a large fireplace and hearth. The building also offers a smaller, more intimate meeting room whose large windows frame the summit of Buck Mountain.
Dormitory
Year-round Rockwell Lodge provides home base for a perfect get-away for your extended family, youth groups, or gang of best buddies. The common room includes a fully equipped kitchen and space for dining and lounging. The two dormitories feature a large room with eight bunk beds, a private room with one or two beds, and a bathroom.
Hike and Trip Center
The Harvey Dearstyne Hike and Trip Center is the staging center for Chingachgook’s exciting adventure trips. This is where leaders research, plan, and prepare for wilderness expeditions; and where campers organize, pack, and later clean, their gear.
The upstairs Fischbeck Library holds resources for interpreting the natural world including travel guides, instructional books, nature references, and topographical maps. A gear room holds expedition and recreational equipment including tents, stoves, backpacks, snowshoes, snowboards, and fishing poles.
The Karl Runkle Great Room is an ideal meeting space for groups who appreciate taking care of business in front of a hearth and then stepping out for a walk in the Adirondack forest. The wide, wrap-around deck offers sheltered gathering areas on all four sides of the building.
Climbing Tower
The Hannaford Climbing tower is 53 feet tall and offers six routes of various levels of difficulty from novice to advanced.
Waterfront
The heart and soul of YMCA Camp Chingachgook is found on the 180-foot shoreline on the widest stretch of Lake George. A shallow sandy bay offers beginners a safe and comfortable area to learn to swim. Around a point from Beginners’ Bay are two 80-foot wooden docks between which swim lanes are roped off in the summertime. Dominating the end of the west dock is a huge, exciting rope swing that youngsters and oldsters alike use continually throughout the swimming season.
Sailing
Chingachgook's
location on Lake George is perfect for sailing. Here is one of the
few places on the lake where you can launch right into the wide-open
lake into the best wind. Nestled in the sailing bay is a fleet of
14-foot sailboats with a cockpit that holds four adults or six children.
These are ideal boats for group sailing lessons. Several 24-foot
expedition sailboats sit on moorings along the shore. These are
the perfect boats for week-long adventure trips, with room to store
camping gear below deck. And nothing is more fun than sailing a
sunfish on a hot summer day. Sunfish are used in sailing classes
or for free sailing to qualified campers.
Sailing for People with Disabilities
We
at Chingachgook are very proud of our Y-Knot sailing program for
people with mobility and other challenges. In a custom-designed
18-foot Freedom sailboat designed with swivel, supportive seats
and stafety strapping, wheelchair-bound adventure lovers can leave
the chair behind and explore the lake with family or friends. Chingachgook
also offers a fleet of four custom-designed racing boats. The deep
cockpit holds two sailors, and the captain steers the boat with
an easy-to-manage joy stick. We also have a sip-and-puff control
mechanism for sailors who have limited hand mobility. EVERYONE can
sail at Chingachgook.
